Launch of the Exodus

Description

Mankind has long since left Earth behind, venturing ever deeper into the galaxy. They have met species no science fiction writer could have dreamed of and beheld view no artist could have imagined. The empire of man was vast, rich and glorious. It was an age of peace, this age of exploration, this true age of space.

Then came the Seraphs.

The Seraphs, named thus on account of their angelic physical appearance, hated man, hated his self-righteousness, his politics and his art, his self-proclaimed naturalness and good, and far were their intentions from anything even remotely divine.

Within a decade from the first contact, the inhabitants of the human empire had been reduced to half its number. The dominion of man had survived endless rebellions, thousands of wars and internal crises, but against the Seraphs we did not stand a chance.

After another decade, humans, once numbering countless billions, could now be counted by the hundreds of thousands, the tenths of thousands.

But mankind is a stubborn species, unwilling to die easily. So we fought back. We constructed new weapons, developed new strategies. We hid. In abandoned systems, on planets with environments so harsh and hostile, you would not last five seconds unprotected.

Slowly, as time passed, the age of resistance grew from months, to years, to decades, and as humans died and were born, lost battles and won battles, a legend started growing. A legend, about a planet the Seraphs did not know about, where humans could live safe. The myth grew until it was no longer myth or legend, but history, a scientific fact. Ancient maps were found, detailing how to find this lost planet. Who had made these maps, no one knew.

Drifting from system to system, always fleeing the Seraphs, they started building a ship unlike any the galaxy had ever seen. A ship that would take them to this safe haven, this promised land, this planet some had began referring to as “Earth”.

And so it was, that just over one hundred years from the first encounter with the Seraphs, the “Exodus” launched, carrying with it not only the majority of humankind, but all of its hopes and dreams. For survival, for peace and for a future.

My first "real" space piece. Considering how much experience I have with this branch of photoshopping, I am spectacularly pleased. The two bottom planets are actually both the same as the one I created for Experimental Planet No 2, only much larger, whereas the three small ones in front of the nebula are actually the same as in Experimental Planet No 1. At first, this picture was just supposed to be an experiment where I would try out various tutorials, but eventually the story came to me, and voila. I should also mention that I plan on doing at least two sequels to this pic.

Hope you like it as much as I do. ^_^

A stunning piece, my Scandinavian friend! Love that you have added city lights to the night side of the planets. And the background story is awesome. Well done!
